Oral language skills are one of the building blocks of emergent literacy. A preschooler’s ability to talk about something that has happened, describe what they see, and maintain a conversation is a big part of what helps them be able to read and write in the future. But what happens when the child is being exposed to English or French for the first time in the child care setting? How can we help children with these skills when we may not even speak their home language? This workshop will quickly take you through what to expect of second language learners and then will be a hands-on look at how we can use current provocations and incorporate new ones to encourage these learners to increase their vocabularies and develop their oral language skills.
