Increasing Children’s Awareness and Understanding of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: 3rd Annual Community Collaborative Open House (Niagara Only)

Join us for our 3rd Annual Community Collaborative Open House, an evening dedicated to increasing awareness, understanding, and meaningful conversations about National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

This event will explore the significance of September 30th and provide practical resources and opportunities to support children in developing an age-appropriate understanding of residential schools, their lasting and intergenerational impacts, and the importance of truth and reconciliation. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with local community agencies, learn about programs and services available to children and families, and discover resources and tools that can be incorporated into early learning environments.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day takes place on September 30th. This day opens the door to meaningful conversations about the history and legacy of residential schools and provides an opportunity to listen, learn, honour survivors and their families, and consider how we can contribute to the ongoing journey of Truth and Reconciliation.

Community Agency Open House (6:30 to 7:30 pm)
Connect with local community agencies and learn more about their programs, services, and resources. Participants will discover practical ways these organizations can support children and educators in creating meaningful learning experiences around National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Preserving Language and Identity with Kristi Talbot (7:30 to 8:30 pm)
Join Kristi Talbot, a Registered Early Childhood Educator with more than a decade of experience serving her Indigenous community in Fort Erie, Ontario, for an engaging conversation about the importance of preserving language, culture, and identity for children.

Kristi will explore how language and cultural identity are deeply connected to a child’s sense of belonging and how educators can help create environments where children see their cultures, histories, languages, and identities reflected and valued.

Drawing on her own experience of reclaiming her culture and language, Kristi will share practical approaches educators can use to introduce and celebrate language, traditions, and cultural knowledge in meaningful and respectful ways.
