What you will be Doing
Responsibilities to Children
• Is attentive to, and provides for, the health and safety needs of the children on a constant basis.
• Ensures that child care routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt, hygienic, and consistent with good child development principles. This includes routines related to diapering, toileting, eating, napping, and transitioning between activities.
• Forms positive relationships with children.
• Is compassionate to children and their needs.
• Positively engages with children and tailors interactions based on each child’s individuality.
• Makes the children their priority when in the program.
• Makes children feel welcome and that they belong at the centre – greeting and acknowledging children as the arrive or depart for the day.
• Ensures that each child’s supervision meets the goals of the Centre’s philosophy in respect to behavior management of children, the children’s needs for positive experiences and the children’s needs for a safe and secure environment.
• Sets reasonable behavior expectations consistent with the Centre’s behavior management policy.
• Conducts a daily “health check” of each child and updates self daily on children’s allergies and special conditions.
• In co-operation with other members of the teaching team, provides a child care schedule that meets the needs of all the children in care.
• Develops and maintains open communication with parents and establishes a “partnership” rapport.

Compliance with Centre Policies and Procedures
• Operates the program (classroom, playground, field trips etc.) in compliance with all child care licensing standards under the Childcare and Early Years Act and operating procedures including fire, health and safety.
• Ensures the physical layout, appearance and décor of playrooms and parent reception areas are bright and welcoming (ex. Children’s art work or other child related items are displayed).
• Maintains a safe and healthy environment by cleaning and sanitizing equipment according to procedure; participates in housekeeping duties as required.
• Assists the supervisor with keeping accurate records of all matters pertaining to the administration of the program and reports any pertinent information that they should be aware of including medical information, child absences and communications from parents.
• Maintains classroom inventory so that equipment can be kept in good repair and supplies can be purchased in a timely manner (for example art supplies).
• Releases children only to authorized persons.
• Follows centre procedure and government legislation regarding reporting of all incidents of child abuse.
• Reports all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the supervisor and record such incidents in the daily log book as a serious occurrence if appropriate.
• Abides by the operating policies and procedures of the centre as outlined in the Employee Policy Manual and in accordance with the Childcare and Early Years Act including: Fire drills and evacuation procedures, sanitary practices, administration of medications, behavior management and serious occurrences.
• Maintains confidentiality of all matters related to children, parents and staff.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of the classroom and the program as a whole on an ongoing basis.
• Submit a minimum of five pieces of documentation a month to the supervisor.
Curriculum
• Plans and conducts a stimulating and effective curriculum that reflects the Centre’s commitment to meeting the overall needs of each child, respecting their individual religious, cultural, family background and special needs.
• Prepares weekly program plans that provide a wide variety of social, creative, emotional, intellectual and physical activities.
• Ensures that all supplies, materials, spaces and equipment necessary for planned activities are available and prepared for use.
• Provides a balance of indoor/outdoor, active and quiet activities.
• Uses a variety of teaching techniques including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating and reinforcing.
• Provides experiences which promote individual self-expression in conversation, imaginative play and creativity.
• Provides a variety of language stimulation activities.
• Provides experiences involving thinking skills such as generalizing, classifying, sorting and problem solving.
• Provides a variety of opportunities to help children develop and understand appropriate relationships with others.
• Encourages children to make decisions by providing choices.
• Access community resources to enrich the program offered to the children.
• Plans and carries out experiences which encourage understanding of a variety of cultures and value systems; promotes anti-racist and non-sexist interactions and attitudes.
• Ensures rest time does not exceed 2 hours in length (Child Care and Early Years Act).
Your Skills and Experience
• Enthusiasm for early childhood education and a warm, supportive attitude toward children.
• Ability to cultivate relationships with children, parents, co-workers and work successfully in a team-based environment.
• Knowledge of best practices in working with infants/young children and able to develop creative play ideas to engage kids with.
• Adaptable and flexible to change work assignments depending on the needs of the program.
• Respectful of differing family lifestyles and backgrounds and value systems.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Must have an ability to work with a variety of other professionals in the field, personnel and clients on an ongoing basis.
• Knowledge of “How Does Learning Happen” Pedagogy and ability to apply the framework to assigned job responsibilities.
• 1-3 years of experience working with children between 18-48 months in age.
• College Diploma in Early Childhood Education or equivalent.
• Current emergency first aid and Infant/Child CPR certification.
• Able to stand, move and play with children and bend and squat to their height.
• Able to carry/lift children up to 50lbs.
• Strong emotional intelligence and patience to work with young children.

Job Description
The Registered Early Childhood Educator is responsible for the supervision and management of a classroom in accord with the philosophy of the centre. The principal duties of the Early Childhood Educator include: ensuring the safety and physical well-being of the children, carry out curriculum on a daily basis and evaluate the effectiveness of the program, maintain regular communication with the parents and contribute to the effective operation of the overall child care program. They are also responsible for the development of activities that are designed to engage children’s learning through play and completing documentation in accordance with Centre policies.
